Paul Duane Haslerud

I am a direct descendant, 4th generation, of an original settler of Peterson. My parents were Albert George and Esther Pauline Larsen Haslerud. Grandparents: George P. and Julia M. Withe [Wethe] Haslerud; Peder and Bergitte Nilsen Larsen. Greatgrandparents: Peter Peterson and Cornelia Aslaksdatter Anderson Haslerud.

I have seven brothers and sisters; Walter, deceased; Ethel, Mrs. Alfred Clark; Francis, deceased; Glenn, Daniel, deceased; Milton, and Adeline Ungerman.

In 1956 I was married to Beverly Joann Olness. She is the daughter of Joseph Martin, deceased, and Bertha Lillian Woxland Olness. Her grandparents were John Lars and Bertha Hermanson Olness and Cornelius Simon and Jacobina Thossesson Woxland.

Beverly has three brothers and sisters; Carroll; Jean, Mrs. Roger Allen; and Barbara, Mrs. George W. Hovland.

We have three children; Jon Duane of San Diego; Joel Douglas recently returned to Peterson after serving 6 years in the US Navy; and Joan Diane, Burnsville, Minnesota. We have two granddaughters, Tiffany Ann and Amber Lynn.

At present we are living in and remodeling the home my father, Albert, and grandfather, G.P., built in the early 1900's on land originally platted and owned by Peter Peterson Haslerud. The house was built with walls of embossed tin both inside and outside.

I attended Peterson schools, graduating in May of 1953. In June of 1953 I enlisted in the US Navy. After serving 30 years, I received an honorable discharge in July of 1983. During my years of service I have been stationed aboard several ships and in many cities. I have made three Mediterranian cruises, three Western Pacific cruises and numerous Caribbean cruises plus spending 17 months in Viet Nam while I was attached to Mobile Construction Battalion 53. On one of the cruises I was initiated into the Solemn Mysteries of the Ancient Order of the Deep and declared a Trusty Shellback by crossing the Equator.

While I traveled courtesy of the US Navy, Beverly kept the home together in Arlington and Norfolk, Virginia; Davisville, Rhode Island; Bloomington, Minnesota; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Great Lakes, Illinois; San Diego, California; and Kenitra, Morocco.

During the Cuban crisis we lived in Norfolk, Va. My ship, the USS Fort Snelling LSD- 30, was one that was sent down to cruise around Cuba.

While we were in Morocco, an attempt was made to assassinate King Hassan II. Several station personnel were on the King's golf course with him. They were captured, had their money, indentification cards and important papers destroyed, but they themselves were released unharmed. On the way to the airport the day we were returning to the United States, we met the trucks carrying some of the participants out to execution. The leaders had already faced the firing squad which was broadcast on television.

We've traveled many places, but for us there's no place like Minnesota. Submitted by Paul Haslerud
