• Biography. Hans Gudmundson and his wife, Ingeborg Engebretsdotter, came from Hakadal, Norway, where he was employed in the iron works (jernverket) owned by Baron Harald Wedel Jarlsberg. In the Hakadal Bygdebok Hans is listed as being a "hammersmed" which probably means that he operated the large water powered "tilt-hammer" which was used to pound wrought iron into iron sheets and bars. When the iron works closed they decided to come to America. There is a story that when Hans and Ingeborg left Hakadal, they gave their silver goods away because "in America we will soon be rich". The Gudmundson's left Norway in 1868 from Oslo and reached Quebec, Canada after three months at sea. They made the trip in a sailing ship and had to bring along their own food for the journey.
