• Reference: Howard's Point, ca. 1840, Fayette County, IL. This township was settled during the period included between the years of 1830 and 1860, and the first families came from Tennesee in the first named year, locating near Sugar Creek. For the following four years there seems to habe been no more settlements, but in 1834 some families from Ohio came to what became Howard's Point, named for George and Wiley Howard. They and Thomas Honeycut divide honors as to being the first settlers of whom there is any definite record. Howard's Point grew amazingly and numbered among its residents Tarey Miller, Aaron Gibson, H.P. Logue, Alfred Watson, John Dearborn, Phillip Shull, John Logue, Paul Baughmman, William Gury, Henry Waterman, Joseph Cameron, Andrew Vance, and Doctor Rigdon. There were stores, a blacksmith shop, a tavern, and post office, but now it is a suburb of St. Elmo. Avena takes its name from the French word"avena" meaning oat or oatland.
