Paul Eugene Sandvol, 89, a long time resident of The Dalles, died at home Thursday, May 21, 2009.

He was born Oct. 5, 1919, in Grace City, N.D., the eighth of nine children to Joseph Sandvol and Clara (Johnson) Sandvol. He grew up and attended school in Grace City, N.D. In 1941 he married Mildred Finley in McHenry, N.D., later enlisting in the United States Army. While in the Army he saw action in World War II as part of the 90th Calvary, 10th Armored Tiger Division landing in France and taking part in the Allied Forces final push into Germany. In 1951 he and his family moved to The Dalles where he worked various jobs, later retiring as the superintendant of transportation for School District 12.

He enjoyed storytelling, woodworking, camping, firearms and vacations returning to North Dakota to visit family and old friends. He was a family man who enjoyed spending time with his daughters and their families, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a longtime member of the Eagles and the VFW.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years Mildred; daughters Judy Ringo and companion Ernie Piehl, The Dalles; Barb Stinson and husband Ron, Redmond grandchildren, Scott Rone and wife Kris, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Shannon Jakoby and husband Gregg, Dillon, Colo.; Jenny Kumm and husband Brett, Tigard; Jake Stinson, Beaverton; great-grandchildren Bryce, Alyssa, Peyton, and Trevor Rone, Colorado Springs; Kayla and Kelsey Kumm, Tigard; many nieces, nephews and special friend and brother-in-law, Orville Thompson, The Dalles.
He was preceded in death by his parents and all eight of his siblings.

There will be a formal viewing on Tuesday, May 26, from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 27 at 11 at Spencer, Libby and Powell Chapel, with graveside services immediately following at the IOOF/Park Lawn Cemetery with Spencer, Libby and Powell in care of arrangements.
