• Biography. Embret (Engebret) Sørensen was from the husmannsplass Rotneseiet in Nittedal parish. He was born about 1794 and died in 1862. Ingeborg's mother was Anne Evensdotter, born ca 1790, the daughter of Even Jonsen of the iron works. Embret and Anne were married in 1815 in Hakadal. They were husmann on the Hellerud farm and Embret also worked at the iron works.

The farm that Hans and Ingeborg lived on in Norway was called Masvollen so after they came to America they sometimes went by the name of Masvollen instead of Gudmundson. In Norway, they also had the last name of Hellerud so at one time, they must have lived on the Hellerud farm. Today there are no old houses of other buildings on either Hellerud or Masvollen but the field where the Masvollen house was located is still called Masvollen. Sometimes, when the Masvollen field is plowed, the plow still hits old foundation stones. Hans and Ingeborg never owned Masvollen because Masvollen was a small farm (husmannsplass) under the main farm owned by the iron works where they could live and raise a few animals and crops. The Masvollen husmannplass had about eight acres of cultivated land and two acres of uncultivated land.

In America they bought a farm in Norway Township, Fillmore County, Minnesota about two miles northeast of Choice and made their home there. The 1878 plat map shows that H. Gulmanson owned an 80 acre farm, the north 1/2 of the south-east 1/4 of section 35 of Norway Township. The 1896 plat map shows that C. Peterson and H. Gudmunson owned a 160 acre farm, the south-east 1/4 of section 35 on Norway Township. (Note: The spelling of names on these old plat maps was often wrong.) The Masvollen farm was only about two miles from the Eiken farm so it is easy to see how Tollef and Johanna got together.

• Occupation: Cotter.

Engebret married Anne Evensdatter AARNÆSEJE, daughter of Even Jonson HOLM and Berte Johannsdtr. HOLM, on 26 Dec 1815 in Hakadal, Nittedal, Akershus, Norway.1 (Anne Evensdatter AARNÆSEJE was born in 1790 in Hakadal, Nittedal, Akershus, Norway and died on 19 Sep 1881 in Hakadal, Nittedal, Akershus, Norway 4.)
