Joseph 'Big Joe' Eiken, 66, of Iowa

Joseph "Big Joe" Henry Eiken, 66, of Dorchester, Iowa, died Sunday, July 15, 2012, at his home.

He was born Oct. 28, 1945, in Spring Grove to Joseph E. and Edna J. (Lund) Eiken. He attended Spring Grove High School.

He was a lifelong area resident, except for a short time that he farmed in Illinois.

He was a member of the United States Army from 1965 to 1968 and was stationed in Germany.

Joe married Linda Larson on Dec. 23, 1967, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dorchester.

Joe farmed for many years. He also owned a tavern, and for the last eight years, he and his wife have operated "Big Joe's Campground," which he built and continued to plan projects for.

Survivors include his wife, Linda of Dorchester; a son, Joseph O. (Kelly) Eiken and their children Reilly, Olivia and Nora; two daughters, Tina (Darin) Kampschroer and their children, Payton, Dylan and Sydnie of Spring Grove, and Julianna (Patrick) Lile and their children, Maggie and Madison, also of Spring Grove; three sisters, Audrey (Charles) Ellingson of Caledonia, Karen (Ron Meany) Kragness of Spring Grove and Lauren (Craig) Amdahl of Mabel; and a brother, David (Renee) Eiken of Spring Grove; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He is further survived by his uncle, Lee Lund of Stevens Point, Wis., and his aunt, Helen Olson of Houston.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four children who died in infancy and his nephew, Jon Kragness.

Joe will be deeply missed by family and friends. His grandchildren will cherish the memories of times spent with Grandpa Joe at the campground - from fishing to campfires and riding around on his golf cart.

Joe enjoyed visiting with campers and playing cards. He was a regular at the Spring Grove Lions sporting events.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 19, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dorchester. The Rev. Joseph Schneider will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in rural Dorchester.

Friends may call Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Roble Funeral Home in Spring Grove and one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
