Esten Anderson Evjen: b. 6 Dec. 1831 at Småvollan, Evjen in Støren, Sør-Trøndelag, Norway, a son of Anders Estenson Evjen and Ragnhild Johnsdatter Soknes. He was a husmann a short time on Røskaftflåtten in Horg. Esten was a brother of John Anderson Evjen on P17-1

Esten d. 5 Dec. 1895 in Preble. He m. on 6 June 1861 to Kari (Karoline) Arntsdtr. Røskaftflåtten, b. 7 Oct. 1837 at Røskaft in Horg/Størn, Sør-Trøndelag, Norway, d. 17 Jan. 1924. Kari's parents were Arnt Olsen Røskaft and Berit Ellevsdtr. Lund. Kari was a sister of Ole Røskaft's mother on N32-3. They came from Norway to America in 1872.

Esten was killed by one of his horses, a stallion who had been turned loose and went to the barn of his neighbor, Arnt Arntson Evjen. When Esten went to retrieve the animal, the horse kicked him and killed him instantly. Arnt saw Esten fall but the horse would not let him retrieve the body. Arnt had to go to Tollef M. Olson (farm P8-4), about a mile away, for help. Tollef brought his rifle and shot the horse.

Esten and Carrie also raised their granddaughter Sena Larson, a daughter of Jonas and Rachel (Ragnhild) Larson after Rachel died. Sena, b. April 1889 in Volga, South Dakota, m. Ole Nelson. See Sena and Ole on P7-2. In 1920 Carrie Evjen was farming the land (age 82) with the help of her daughter Betsy (Berit) (52 years old) and granddaughter Sena (30 years old). Later Sena cared for her grandmother.

1. Ragnhild Anderson Evjen (Rachel Anderson): b. 1865 in Norway, d. 28 Dec. 1892 and is buried at Volga, SD. In 1888 she m. Jonas Larson. See Jonas under John Larson on P15-3. In 1885, Rachel Anderson was a hired girl for John N. Johnson on P22-2.

2. Berit (Betsy) Anderson Evjen: b. 13 Jan. 1868 in Norway, d. 16 Mar. 1923. Single

3. Andrew Anderson Evjen: b. 16 June 1877, d. 19 Jan. 1955. He m. Gena Pierce of Whalan. Gena d. 9 Jan. 1948. Whalen, Minn.
