1843
Skien July 6th. The two brigs Axel & Valborg and Venskabet have just returned from Havre de Grace, to where they conveyed 329 emigrants, of which 309 proceeded on the ship Argo on Midsummer Day from Havre to New York. The cost of passage on the Argo was 50 Fr., which was 10 Fr. more than what they had expected. On the same ship there were also 80 emigrants from Switzerland. All the Norwegian emigrants were healthy and by good courage at departure. The brig Venskabet is returning 26 emigrants which did not have the sufficient means to proceed to America. Let that be a warning for others not to start on such a long voyage without taking notice of what kind of means is needed. Passengers who departed from here with Capt. Pedersen [* This could be the Nora or the Familien] and Capt. Johnsen [Thora] was able to get places on ordinary merchant ships at the cost of 47 Fr. each. Ship Æolus, Capt. Thorbjørnesn of Kragerø, enrolled 130 of its own passengers to proceed with the ship from Havre to New York. The other 35 passengers were transferred to another ship to proceed to New York at the cost of 47 Fr..

FOUR GENERATIONS

Kjos-Reishus-Swenson Group Above No Doubt Hold Unusual Place In Point of Family Record

It is with pleasure that the Star-Republican presents the above group, reproduced from recent photograph, and brief article accompanying picture. Seldom do we find ? difficult to gain permission ? bring an extraordinary picture, like the above, yet in this instance it was only after persistent efforts we secured reluctant consent.

The group presents four generations of the Reishus-Swenson-Kjos families which ? remarkable and unusual from the fact that the unbroken line of descent can be traced in two families, and ? not Mrs. Tobias Swenson's mother passed away in Hedland Sogn, Norway, a short time ago, then the unbroken four generations could in that family also be produced.

The group above, reading from left to right, is as follows: Mr. Thrond A Kjos, still a resident of Arendahl, making his home with Mr. And Mrs. Herman Johnson, Mrs. Johnson being his daughter. His wife died three years ago. They came to America in 1856.

One his left is his daughter, Mrs. O. E. Reishus and her daughter, Mrs. Swen Swenson and child. Mr. O. E. Reishus and Mrs. E. O. Reishus his mother are at the left of the picture. Thus we can trace on the picture four generations, from left to right, and from right to left, with Mrs. Swen Swenson and little babe in center, the robust child alone giving us the fourth and after all most important link in the chain.

We cannot make out story complete without turning back many years, yet many incidents important in the life of the subjects of our sketch must be overlooked from the fact that no detailed record can be had now.

Even O. Reishus was born at Flatdal Telemarken, 1822. His parents died in some epidemic that passed over that district when Even was four years old. There were other brothers and sisters but after the death of both father and mother, the children were adopted by other families and little is known of their whereabouts. A brother of Even is known to have at one time resided at Cottonwood, this state. Young Even sought employment in a black smith shop when young, but did not follow up his profession after coming to this ???

Kongkenong, Wis., might well have been termed the Castlegarden those days and for many years afterwards, for nearly every early pioneer "landed" there; by water from Christiania or Bergen to Milwaukee. There were no grand trunk railway lines in operation at that time. As lumber jack in the forests and rafter on Wisconsin streams during summer, Even succeeded in getting a small start and five years of his life was spent in that way. In 1858 he came to Fillmore county, homesteaded the S. T. Gjerness farm west of this city and returned to Wisconsin but came back the following year, accompanied by a cousin, Sondre Reishus. Sondre homesteaded the Lewis Knudson farm now occupied by Emil Colbenson and family. Even lived on his homestead (the S. T. Gjerness farm) for two years and also owned the Miller farm across the rood [road].

In 1855 Even Reishus married and shortly afterward disposed of his homestead and in company with brother-in-law Peter Haslerud, bought the Aslak Anderson farm in Arendahl township. This was the first farm homesteaded in that town. Here Mr. and Mrs. Even Reishus resided until death claimed Mr. Reishus five years ago, at the age of 80 years. The farm was then sold to O. B. Boyum.

Mrs. Reishus who appears at the left of the picture came to America with her parents in 1843, when seven years old, landing on Wisconsin soil and came to Minnesota in 1854. She is a daughter of Aslak Anderson, mentioned above as the first homesteader in Arendahl, is now a resident of Rushford and is enjoying good health. Her father is 90 years old when he died.

Ole E. Reishus, the fourth child born to Mr. and Mrs. Even O. Reishus, and forming the second link in the four generations, sits to the right of his mother. Of brothers he has two and sisters seven; Mrs. Wangsness of Cottonwood, Mrs. A. R. Tungland, North Prairie; Mrs. A. T. Kjos of this city; Edward of Alberta, John Reishus, Mrs. Carl Johnson and the Misses Emma and Clara Reishus of this city, Mrs. Marin Kjos of Arendahl. Besides the above, a brother and sister are dead.

Returning to the left of the picture we have the venerable old gentleman still a resident of Arendahl, Thrond A. Kjos. At his left sits his daughter, Mrs. O. E. Reishus, who became grandmother at the age for 45, by the birth of Baby Swenson who is now 11 months old. Mr. Reishus is about the same age, 45 years, and while they are not the youngest grandparents in this city they enjoy the situation in which good fortune has placed them and are proud of their exceptional family record.

Thrond Kjos and wife are parents of twelve children of whom seven are living - Mrs. O. E. Reishus, Andrew T. Kjos, of this city, Ole Kjos of Arendahl, Carl Kjos of Hettinger, Mrs. Henry Currie, Mrs. Herman Johnson and Mrs. Erick Highum of Arendahl.

Speaking but briefly of the Swenson family, and ending with the passing of Mrs. Swenson's mother, until recently the oldest resident of Hedland, Norway, will not suffice. Tobias Swenson, father of Swen Swenson, whose bouncing baby adorns the above picture, lived to the ripe old age of 79 years. He came to America 36 years ago from Stavanger. Mr. and Mrs. Tobias Swenson owned the farm which now forms a large part of the P. P. Highum farm. After the death of Mr. Swenson some years ago, Mrs. Swenson has been a resident of ???
