Sveen & Nordgaard Family

Mr. and Mrs. Thorsten Sveen left Norway to come to America in 1886 [sic] by boat. It took six weeks to get here. They had four children with them, born in Norway. Nine more were born in Fillmore County. They brought food and their cows with them on the boat, so they had milk for the children. Grandma Sveen brought her spinning wheel and her sewing machine with her. Grandpa Sveen brought the hand tools he had for wood working.

Grandma Sveen was a very good seamstress, she sewed for people to make extra money. They were brave people, came to the east coast by boat and then by some kind of train to Fillmore County, where several other people from Norway had settled. There were very few places left to homestead. They found our place, lots of hills and woods, but they took the place anyway. Very poor, they lived in a hillside cave the first year. Grandpa Sveen grubbed and cleared land for people for fifty cents a day.

As soon as they could, Grandpa Sveen built a log house for the family. Mary was one of the thirteen Sveen children and she married Theadore Nordgaard. Only one of the Sveen family is still living, Louise Ferden of McIntosh, Minnesota.

In 1914, Theadore and Mary Nordgaard bought the Sveen farm and farmed for many years. They had one child, Melvin. Then in 194 1, Melvin and his wife, Marion, took over the home farm, which has been in the same family for 97 years. Melvin Nordgaards have four childrn; Diane Dunn of Florida, Barbara Smackenberg of Montgomery, Glen of Fremont and Ardell at home. Submitted by: Marion Nordgaard
