Sibert Maynard Olness, 82, of 1559 West King St., passed away Monday, April 3, 2000 at his home in Winona.

Sibert, known as Maynard, was born June 22, 1917, at Peterson, MN to John and Bertha (Hermanson) Olness. After graduating from Peterson High School as Salutatorian of his class, he farmed with his dad on the family farm.

He was married to Corrine Margaret Boyum by Dr. Oscar C. Hanson on June 20, 1945, at the Arendahl Lutheran Church, rural Peterson. After their marriage they settled in Winona where Maynard was employed at Bay State Milling Co. for 39-1/2 years, where he ran the grain elevator.

Maynard enjoyed many hobbies including hunting, fishing, and gardening. He was an avid history buff, enjoyed reading and watching Vikings football. His time spent with his family and five grandchildren was most important to him. He also had been a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

After retiring from Bay State Milling, he enjoyed traveling with his wife Corrine.

Maynard was a member of Central Lutheran Church for 46 years.

He is survived by his wife, Corrine; three children, Bonnie (Robert) Simonet of St. Paul, MN, Susan Frosch of Winona, and James of Roseville, MN; five grandchildren, David and Ryan Simonet of St. Paul, and Peter, Andrew and Elizabeth Frosch of Winona; a brother, Manvel Olness of Rushford, MN; three sisters, Berdine (Hubert) Highum of Peterson, MN, Olive (Palmer) Peterson of Rushford, MN, and Evelyn (Ronald) Bremseth of Rushford; and many nieces and nephews.

Maynard was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Joseph and Conrad, and a son-in-law, Mark Frosch.

Funeral services were Saturday, April 8 at Central Lutheran Church with Pastor Wade E. Davick officiating. Burial was in Arendahl Lutheran Cemetery, rural Peterson.

Memorials may be directed to the Arendahl Lutheran Cemetery Association or to the Central Lutheran Church Building Fund.

Pallbearers were Jerry Sawyer, Scott Moran, Wayne Highum, Murton Boyum, Cortland Humble and George Hovland.

Honorary pallbearers were considered former associates of Bay State Milling Co.

"God saw he was getting tired, so he put his arms around him and whispered 'come with me.' With tearful eyes we watched him suffer and saw him fade away. Although we loved him dearly, we could not make him stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best."

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.

Sibert married Corrine Margaret BOYUM, daughter of Carl Martin BOYUM and Cora Amanda SWIGGUM, on 20 Jun 1945 in Winona County, MN.1 (Corrine Margaret BOYUM was born on 13 Jul 1923 in Winona County, MN 4 and died on 16 Nov 2002 in La Crosse County, WI 5.)
