• Notes. On December 31, 1899, his wife died, after being sick about ten weeks. That was a hard blow for him. Concerning this he wrote as follows to President Hanson: "By the death of my wife a veil of sorrow was spread over my whole family, but I think it was hardest for me who more than others must feel the loss of a beloved wife and a tender mother in the house."

We permit ourselves to reproduce the following short biography of her, written by Pastor Breidablik for "Budbareren" immediately after her death: "Mrs. Anna E. Boyum died on December 31 last past at 9 o'clock in the evening in faith in her Savior, and thus was granted to celebrate New Year's at the throne of the Lamb in the kingdom of glory. --She was born on May 13, 1835, in Balestrand parish, Norway, and was baptized and confirmed in the same place. --In 1859 she came to America, and the same year on July 25 she was married to Pastor A. E. Boyum. She was the mother of twelve children, of which flock, five had preceded her across the river, while seven are still here in exile.

Mrs. Boyum was a cheerful, noble-minded character, an intelligent, quiet, and unassuming woman, a tender mother, a careful and faithful wife. During more than forty years she stood at her husband's side in prosperity and in adversity, in sorrow and in joy, and together with him she bore the burdens along life's way, often difficult, as it is especially for a servant of the Lord.

To say farewell to such a friend, to such a support, and there after to stumble about alone in the days of old age, that must be hard. No wonder that old Pastor Boyum's hair has turned gray so fast in these last days.

The funeral was held on Thursday, January 4, with very many present. This was a testimony the Mrs. Boyum had many friends in North Prairie. Her six sons carried the coffin. She had carried them many times and had watched over them with faithful eyes. Now they had the opportunity to carry her--to the grave."
