• Notes: Julia's journal. The first winter we lived at this place, Grandma had the hard luck to fall and break her hip. It was New Year's Day and she had been over to Johnsons to see her daughter and coming back towards evening, she slipped on some ice and fell. She had lain there quite awhile before a neighbor came by and saw her and he carried her home. And oh, what pain she was in and not enough with that, but she got pneumonia too from getting so chilled lying in the snow. She got over that but her strength left her little by little and at last she got a stroke which ended her pain. She died the first part of March but I don't remember what date. I used to sit in a rocker by her bed and sleep most of the time while she was bed-ridden in case there was something she wanted. She was so glad to have some one in the room with her. She was 86 years old when she passed away.
