Elmer Halvorson
Dies At Peterson

On October 11, 1940 occurred the death of Elmer Halvorson, one of Peterson's old and respected pioneers. Mr. Halvorson had lived the greater part of his long and useful life in Peterson and had served his community in many capacities, including that of member of the Village Council, member of the Board of Education, local assessor and various offices in the church.

Elmer Halvorson was born in Valders [Valdres*], Norway, on September 22, 1858. His parents were Halvor and Sigrid Todneas. The father died at an early age and the widowed mother together with her three sons and one daughter migrated to America in 1867. The family settled first in Ossian, Iowa, but came shortly afterwards to Fillmore County. Later the family moved to South Dakota where they endured the hardships of pioneer life in their sod huts on the homesteads,

While the rest of the family remained in Dakota, Mr. Halvorson returned to Peterson where on September 1, 1883, he was married to Adeline Haslerud, daughter of P. P. Haslerud, Peterson's earliest settler. To this union wore born five children, four of whom survive, namely: George P., of Minneapolis, Edwin A of Mabel, Arthur T. and (Helen), Mrs. 0. L. Olness of Peterson. One brother, O. C. Halvorson of Brandt, S D., also survives The youngest son Raymond died in 1937. Mrs. Halvorson passed away in 1933, a few weeks after the family had observed their golden wedding anniversary. There are seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Ev. Luth. church, Rev- T. J. Spande officiating. Pall bearers were all nephews: Hjalmer Engelstad of Dawson, Minn., Elmer Engelstad of Astoria, S. D., Henry Halvorson of Brandt, S. D., John Haslerud, Oliver Haslerud and Oscar Ensberg. Solos ware sung by a niece, Mrs. Gisselquist of Minneapolis and Miss Ida Hjelle and Ida Alta and Clenora Hjelle sang a trio.

Burial was made in the church cemetery east of town.
