A WISCONSIN TRAGEDY.
---
A Well-Known Citizen of Black River Falls Shot Dead in His Door Yard - A Woman Thought to be in the Case.

Samuel Kenyon, a well-to-do farmer, living about three miles form Black River Falls, was shot and almost instantly killed last Sunday night at his own door. The facts of the killing are as follow: Kenyon, his wife, her sister, Kenyon's mother and his only daughter, Dora, a girl of eleven years, were in the sitting room, Mrs. Constantine, Kenyon's sister-in-law, was reading to them from a paper. Mrs. Kenyon, wife of the deceased, retired at 8:10. The remainder of the company stayed a few minutes later until the story was finished, when Kenyon said, "It is getting late now. Let's all go to bed and finished the paper to-morrow." He drew off his boots and went to the back door and out to the well, which is situated about size feet from the house and half way between the corner of the building and the door through the window looking out onto the porch Mrs. Constantine saw Kenyon go to the pump and draw a bucket of water, after which he went towards the corner of the house and stood directly in front of the window, with this back towards it. She heard his say to some one: "Come in. Why don't you come in?" The only answer heard was the sharp crack of a revolver, followed by the sound of a struggle and the fall of a body. Mrs. Constantine and Kenyon's mother ran quickly to the door and looked out, but no signs of any person were to be seen, but a house was heard running at full speed down the road, and the murderer escaped. There is no clue to the murderer, nor can any reason be assigned for it. Kenyon lived in Black River Falls for many years, acting in the capacity of landlord of the Merchants hotel, livery stable and farmer. He had owned the fastest horses in Jackson county, and while his life was not the most exemplary, still he was not known to have had deadly enemies. It is rumored that a woman is at the bottom of the affair.

News of the murder of Samuel Kenyon, a farmer living three miles east of Black River Falls, was brought in by a son of the murdered man on Saturday night. Kenyon and his family were sitting about the table reading, and about ten o'clock he started out of the back door to the pump to get a drink of water. As he opened the door he was heard to make an exclamation of surprise and to say "good evening, come in," as if addressing some one at the door. Then, almost immediately following the sound of his voice, the family heard the report of a pistol, and rushing out beheld the lifeless form of Kenyon and the man who committed the murder riding away on horse back toward town. Who could have committed the ac or the incentive therefor are mysteries.

Samuel married Mary PATTERSON on 9 Sep 1855 in PA. (Mary PATTERSON was born about 1836 in NY and died in 1905 in WI.)
