Mrs. Madeline Paquette.

The funeral of Mrs. Madeline Paquette was held from St. Joseph's Catholic church, last Thursday morning, Rev. M. J. Kinney officiating.

Mrs. Paquette died at the home of her son Peter at Fort Defiance, Arizona on September 30th, of heart failure. Mrs. Paquette had been in poor health for some time. She returned from Arizona, last spring, and spent the summer at her home here. Early in September, when her son Peter and her daughters, Miss Mary, and Mrs. Catherine Argyle, returned to Arizona, she returned there with them. She stood the. return trip very well, in spite of her advanced years and feeble condition, but about a week before her death was confined to her bed by illness. Her condition was not regarded as serious, but that section of the country was visited by an earthquake of considerable magnitude and the shock to her system resulted in her death. The remains were brought here last Wednesday morning, accompanied by list son Peter and daughter, Miss Mary.

Mrs. Paquette was born at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, on March 18th, 1832, and during her long life in western Wisconsin she saw many changes from the pioneer conditions which existed in her youth. She was first married to Gabriel Brisbois, who died leaving her with two children surviving. She was afterwards married to Moses Paquette. They made their home at Portage for a number of years, and came to this county in 1882, Mr. Paquette engaging in farming and also acting as business agent and interpreter for the Winnebago Indians of the state. Mr. Paquette died in 1896. She afterwards made her home in this city in an elegant residence in the first ward. When her son, Peter, and daughter. Miss Mary, moved to Arizona to take charge at the government Indian school at Fort Defiance, she accompanied them there, returning here to spend the summers at her old home. She is survived by seven children- George Brisbois, of Portage; Mrs. Catherine Argyle, Peter and Miss Mary Paquette, of Fort Defiance, Arizona; St. Clair Paquette, of La Crosse; Solomon Paquette, of Beach, N. Dak.; and Moses Paquette, of this city. All were in attendance at the funeral except Mrs. Argyle, who is in Arizona. She also leaves a sister, Mrs. Theresa Lavine, and several grandchildren, two of whom, Miss. Tilda O'Connell and Miss Winnie Paquette, made their home with her for several years.

Mrs. Paquette, leaves many friends here who extend their sympathy to the bereaved children and relatives. She was a woman highly regarded by those who knew her and her kind, motherly disposition endeared her to many. She was devoted to her family circle and of that hopeful, cheerful disposition which brought great comfort to her home and children. As a neighbor she was always courteous and accommodating, ready to lend a helping hand in occasions of distress or bereavement and willing at all times to be obliging and friendly. She wall unostentatious in her manner, but she was possessed with firm, decisive character and much resolution. During the later years of her life she suffered of a severe malady, but she bore her afflictions with patient endurance and uncomplainingly.

Madeline married Gabriel A. BRISBOIS, son of George Pascal BRISBOIS and Catherine PROVOST, on 11 Jul 1852 in Crawford County, WI. (Gabriel A. BRISBOIS was born on 18 Dec 1829 in WI and died on 8 Aug 1887 in Clark County, WI.)

Madeline next married Moses PAQUETTE, son of Pierre PAUQUETTE and Therese Josephine CRELY, on 5 Jun 1859 in Crawford County, WI. (Moses PAQUETTE was born on 4 Mar 1828 in Columbia County, WI and died on 24 Oct 1896 in Jackson County, WI.)

  Marriage Notes:

In 1859, I was married at Prairie du Chien, to Madeleine, the widow of Gabriel Brisbois, who was a nephew of B. W. Brisbois. We lived in Caledonia until 1883, when we removed to my present farm in the town of Albion, Jackson county, four miles northwest of Black River Falls, I having taken the position of government interpreter for the Winnebagoes of Wisconsin. We have had seven children, six of whom are living [1892], and three of whom are still at home.
