Letter from Marshall Davidson, Attorney at Law, 532 North Central Avenue, Prestonsburg, KY,
to Karen L. Salisbury, 22 June 2000
I am enclosing the written artifact on Adam Gearhart as promised at GENFLO. It is a photostat of an agreement between Col. David Morgan and Gearhart on September 9, 1813 to sell some land to Gearhart on certain conditions.
Unfortunately David Morgan never received any money from Gearhart and never deeded him any land. In the month following the agreement, David Morgan and his son, William, were killed by Edward Osborn, a tenant, on the Morgan farm, later the Davidson Family Far, on October 12, 1813; they were buried in a common grave on the farm, now a part of Davidson Memorial Gardens, cemetery at Ivel, KY. According to local legend, William was known as "Bulldog". Subsequently the agreement was honored, Gearhart made payment to Alexander Lackey and Lackey, on behalf of the Estate, as Administrator, made a deed to Gearhart, (I am using the only correct spelling). This deed was executed January 11, 1814 and recorded March 8, 1814 in Deed Book A, page 138, for land located on Beaver Creek in Floyd County KY for 115 acres, described by metes and bounds on the Right Fork of Beaver Creek.
David Morgan and William James Mayo the clerk, were my great-great-great grandfather and Alexander Lackey, Morgan's son-in-law, who accompanied him from Virginia to Kentucky, was my great-great grandfather.
It was a pleasure to render this slight service to a fellow historian. By the two deeds in October, 1803, David Morgan acquired a tract of land, beginning at the mouth of Beaver Creek and running to the head of both forks. Alexander Lackey lived at the forks of Beaver and conveyed, what later became the present City of Martin to a Dingus, who had just arrived in the area.

Adam Gearheart was a sportsman and used negro Jockeys. His best jockey, Dennis, was sold to Morg. Clark, John's Creek. The old race track took in part of the east end of the present Prestonsburg--from Gearheart's home East in Mayo's bottom one mile to Kelse Hollow--Jimmie Davidson now lives at the beginning of the old track, near Maple Street. Mike Tarter of Tennessee, Gearheart's son-in-law brought horses from Tennessee and ran them here. Tarter was a promoter and book-maker also. Penny J. Sizemore and Morg. Clark were other sportsmen. This was as early as 1840 up to the Civil War.
