• Biography. THE TULLIS FAMILY

The Tullis family were among the first arrivals in Miami County, Ohio and
came north from Warren County in 1805. Aaron Tullis was one of 14 children
born to Moses and Mary Elizabeth (Van Dyke) Tullis. Aaron served in the
Revolution in Hugh Stephenson's Company of Berkely Riflemen. Aaron was
first married to Jean (?), and 8 children were born to them: Sarah, Aaron,
Jr., Stephen, John, William, Caty, David R. and Joel. Aaron married second
Sarah THOMSON and a son John Thomson Tullis was born to them.

In 1813, Aaron deeded 40 acres and 23 poles of his land to the Town
Directors of Troy for $120.30, and this land became a part of the present
day city of Troy.

Sarah (Thomson) Tullis died on July 2, 1816, and on October 3, 1816, Aaron
married for a third time Mary (Smith) Barbee, daughter of Adam and
Elizabeth Smith. Two of Mrs. Barbee's daughters, Sarah and Susannah, had
married two of Aaron's sons, William and David.

Aaron Tullis died October 29, 1840 aged 87. He is buried with his second
wife Sarah in the old Rose Hill Cemetery in Troy. His third wife, Mary
Barbee Tullis, passed away September 7, 1845. She is buried in the old
Barbee Cemetery north of Troy.

• Deed: land, 1762, Frederick County, VA. The earliest concrete evidence of Moses Tullis is from a deed where he is purchasing land in Frederick Co., Virginia, in 1762 from a Lawrence Harrison (Deed Book No. 7, p. 222, Frederick County, Virginia ).

• Tax List, 1764, Frederick County, VA. A Moses Tullis appears on Rent Rolls for Frederick Co, VA, in 1764, and Berkeley Co, VA, in 1772, 1776, and 1777. Of course, some of these later entries could have been his son.

• Deed: trustee, 1770, WV. In 1770, Moses Tullis was named in a deed as one of three trustees, along with John Wright and Peter Burr, for the Elk Branch [NJ] Presbyterian Congregation. (This church still exists today, in Shenandoah Junction, West Virginia.)

• Note: petition, 1775, Berkeley County, VA. A Moses Tullis is listed as a signer of a "Petition of Freeholders of Berkeley County to the Convention, 1775". (Virginia Historial Magazine, Vol 13 (No. 4, April 1906), pp 412-415).

• Will, 1777, Berkeley County, WV. WILL OF MOSES TULLIS

Office of Berkeley Co., W. VA County Court, Will Book #1, pp 118-119.

IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN. I Moses Tullis of Berkeley County in the Colony of Virginia being sick of Body but of perfect and sound memory thanks to Almighty God for his mercies and calling to mind the uncertain state of life in this world that all flesh must once die, therefore do think proper to dispose of such worldly substance as it pleased God to possess me of at present in manner and form following that is to say I first order my Body be decently interred in such place as shall be thought most convenient and that all my just debts as I owe in right conscience to any manner person or persons be justly paid by my Executors hereafter named within convenient time after my decease and now for my worldly affairs. FIRST, I leave my beloved wife, Mary Elizabeth, one-third part of all my plantation and my Bed and furniture and the mare she customarily rides with saddle and bridle and one-third part of all cows, horses (one colt excepted) sheep, hogs, implements of labour, house-hold furniture and crops now growing. Secondly, I leave to my be-loved son, Aaron Tullis, the sorrel colt and all and every of the remaining two-thirds of the land and other goods I order to be sold by my Executors and equally divided to each of my children and equal part or share and at my wife's decease I order her third share of the plantation to be sold and an equal division of it to be made to all my children then living or to their Heirs. This I make, constitute and ordain to be my last Will and Testament disanulling all other Will or Wills by me heretofore made either by word or write. I constitute Timothy Sewell my Son in Law and Aaron Tullis my son both of Berkeley County in Virginia to be my whole and sole Executors to see this my last Will and Testament duly and truly executed according to the best of their skill and conscience within convenient time after my decease. IN WITNESS whereof I have here-unto set my hand and seal this Tenth Day of June of 1777 seven.

• Note: wives. Moses Tullis of NJ who bought a plantation in Frederick (later Berkeley WV) VA in 1762 had two wives. Each wife gave him eight children.
Miss ____ Van Dyke who was the first wife had Thomas, Catherine, Sarah, Moses, Jonathan, Mary, Aaron, and Michael. She was not the daughter of John VanDyke as shown in DAR and other records. The will of John VanDyke (who married Magareta Barkolo) proves his daughter Mary/Maria was married to someone else when he died. Moses' Miss ____ Van Dyke was probably from the family of VanDykes residing in Salem County, NJ, where Moses is most likely to be from.
Miss Mary Elizabeth _____ who was the second wife had David, John, Miriam, Samuel, Joel, Amos, William, and Isaac. All the names of the youngest eight children are found in the court settlement of Moses' estate in 1778. Researchers corresponding on the Tullis/Tullos family in the 1920's all indicate that Moses had two wives. The only contradiction of this fact comes with a DAR application in 1914 which confounds the two women into one wife. This mistake was perpetuated by Zola Scott Hardy who wrote a book on the Tullis family in the 1980s.

Moses married (First Wife) VAN DYKE.

Moses next married Mary Elizabeth VAN DYKE, daughter of Jan VAN DYKE and Margareth BARCOLO, Abt 1760 (abt 1747) in Frederick, VA [later Berkeley, WV]. (Mary Elizabeth VAN DYKE was born about 1733.)

  Marriage Notes:

Note from Tom Tullis...
I have not been able to find any original sources documenting the marriage of Moses Tullis and Mary Elizabeth Van Dyke. However, this "fact" goes back to at least the 1930's among Tullis researchers-- not that that makes it any more true, just a widespread assumption among many researchers. What is clear, from Moses' will, is that his wife at the time he died, and who survived him by some number of years, was named Mary Elizabeth. Some researchers believe that Moses Tullis was actually married twice: first to a Miss Van Dyke and second to a Mary Elizabeth Unknown. This is possibly more consistent with the total number of children involved. It is also perhaps more consistent with the fact that his widow, Mary Elizabeth, later remarried to a Mr. Timmons. If anyone has any original sources documenting the marriage or marriages of Moses Tullis I would appreciate hearing from you.
