Jasper TERRY

  • Marriage (1): Ruth
  • Marriage (2): Margaret SNIDOW

Noted events in his life were:

• Biography. Jasper was a Revolutionary War soldier with Captain Easons regiment.
Note* Jasper Terry, son of William Terry, Sr., carried on the tradition his father had set before him. He was a large landowner, having received a land grant on March 10, 1758, of 250 acres in Botetourt County, located on Mud Lick Run.

Jasper and his wife, Mary, sold 10 acres of this land in 1772 to Robert McElhaney for the sum of 50 pounds. This land was in Roanoke,Virginia. Part of the city of Roanoke is located on Terry land (Mud Lick Run.)

Jasper Terry, in 1757, served as a road surveyor with his father, and by 1781, Jasper and his son, Josiah Terry conveyed to James Neely 240 acres of land on Mud Lick Run. [3] In 1780, Jasper and two other men were to review the road that leads from Henry Co., from the top of the mountains on Little River to Montgomery Co. line leading towards the lead mines and report the nearest and best way to come. [Kegley's Virginia Frontier, pg 560]

[4] He and son, Josiah sold the remainder of that land but continued living in the area for a few years, and in 1783, they were listed as suppliers of horses and cattle to Captain Eason's Company. Jasper supplied nine horses and twenty-five head of cattle. Josiah supplied four horses and nineteen head of cattle. (Ingmire states that this is enough to join the D.A.R., plus there arae other records.) They supplied horses and cattle to Captain Mason's (Eason's?) Company. Kegley's Virgin i a Frontier, pg 563]

Jasper was appointed constable in 1785. Like his father he was a man of influence and prominence.

Mary Terry appears to have died around the time of the 10 acre sale of land in 1772, as her name is not found on any more records after that time. Ingmire believes that her maiden name was Morrison as Josiah named his son Jasper Morrison Terry. It was the custom in those days to name the oldest son after the father and the mother's maiden name. Jasper appeared to have married a second time to a woman named Ruth.

Both Jasper and Josiah Terry, continued to live in Botetourt County, Virginia, before and after the Revolutionary War. Josiah Terry took an active part in the war, as did other Terry sons. [Kegley's Virginia Frontier, page 583.]

The Jasper Terry family were neighbors of the James Lloyd family. James appears to be the father of Mary Lloyd who became the wife of Josiah Terry. At least 3 parcels of land was surveyed for Jasper, see of James Lloyd, Botetourt Co., Virginia, as found in Surveyor's Book 1774-1808, page 152, involving some 637 acres of land.

Around 1785, father and son, Jasper and Josiah Terry, moved their families to Montgomery County, Virginia.

Note: There are many records in the Ingmire book which I will not include in this record but they can be looked up in her book. Jasper was a Revolutionary War soldier with Captain Easons regiment.
